DESCRIPTION
Afuá is situated on the western side of the Marajó/Pará cluster of islands, swamped by the muddy waters of the Amazon River,  among a tangle of small islands. Like Macapá, it lies on the Equator. With a population of approximately 11 thousand inhabitants at the base and 36 thousand in the rural area, with needs in every aspect, mainly basic sanitation.

The natives survive basically on fishing, hunting, extrativism, açaí, illegal extraction of wood and naval construction of small boats, and a little tourism. More than 54% of the population lack rudimentary instruction - 47% of the children and adolescents lack rudimentary instruction.

The most common way of reaching the region is through embarcation, sailing approximately 4 to 5 hours along the estuary of the Amazon River from Macapá to Afuá.

Lack of nutrition, lack of local infrastructure, low income of the families and the dificulties of navegation are factors that frighten, because the children are growing up without opportunities and without the perspective of a future, predestined to failure that comes from generations past.
